Peter has been the OGA’s ‘man in Maldon’ for many years. Maldon was where the OGA was founded and where Peter was proud to be the reviver of the Maldon Town Regatta at the beginning of the century. His quiet, warm, friendly approach to others made them want to help him and be part of his team. The team also wanted Peter to be their leader. I was able to join Peter to help run the Maldon Town Regatta after he had it well established with strong support from the OGA. The Race Team went afloat on Friday evening to sail down-river to Mersea. Warm hospitality abord ‘Advent’ made the day most enjoyable whatever the weather. Later, I was able to persuade Peter to join my team to run the OGA East Coast Race from Brightlingsea. With Peter as OOD the fleet relaxed as they knew that they were in good hands.

Sailing was in his blood. Peter owned a series of craft and sailed long distances with his life-time partner and wife Jo. As the family arrived, they joined the crew to add to the fun. His sailing embraced both Bermudan and Gaffer – he seemed to be at home in all craft and in all weathers. Underneath that relaxed persona a steely accountant lurked, but you would never know. He helped audit the OGA accounts for many years. Thank-you Peter for your strong support and friendship.

A personal reflection from Richard Giles
